Birkin versus style

One fine day I saw this neon pink Birkin bag. It is like the most wanted bag on earth in the trendiest color of the moment. Was I bedazzled? NO! It is like psychology: when you love something so much, at one point it will turn into aversion! This neon bag proves that the biggest it-bag in the world does not look phenomenal in any form!

The question is: for whom are these bags designed? My guess the princesses of Bahrain or Suzanne Rogers. Believe me when you buy a neon Birkin, you have other Birkin’s too! Or at least I hope they do, because you would be a complete fashion fool to spend thousands of dollars on a color that won’t last long. But hey money makes the world go round!

And this is exactly my point! I am not the princess of Bahrein. So I invest in classic designs that will stand the test of time! Yes and I call it an investment. I know you will have to stuff your piggy bank for a very long time, but let me tell you it is worth it. But please, oh please, be careful. Don’t let the magpie in you win! If you spoil yourself with a killer piece, make sure it is the right one. Don’t buy extreme colors or designs! I think Sabrina will agree!

Now, let me tell you the story about my wedding dress to emphasize my statement. I wanted to get married in the most luxurious, breathtaking, heart pumping dress. Why? Because I am not a typical bride, period. One hot day in the summer of 2006 my mother and I went on a treasure hunt to find the perfect dress! We came across Dior. The façade was glistering in the hot sun and my heart, oh my heart, was beating like a rhino. When we entered the Walhalla of pure fashion magic I saw the most precious, elegant, pieces of art. Everything looked so fragile; I could not resist myself and wanted to touch everything. Oh my, I was in heaven, and heaven was called Dior. All of a sudden I saw a delicate gold and brown little dress. That was the dress I wanted to get married in! I was totally locked out from the outside world! Come down to earth Mrs. K, come down to earth. My body started to tinkle and the excitement took over…. When I came to my senses I took a look at the price tag and so did my mother. Wow!! To buy or not to buy, that was the question. We had to think about it, so we went out for lunch so we could literally debate about the dress. In the end the dress won because it made me speechless.

The question is: would I ever wear this dress again? Yes I will, ironically to one of our best friend’s wedding! I will wear my own vintage Dior dress with some new accessories

So don’t forget this crucial rule: if you go for a credit card overload, think about what you are going to buy. Do some research, be patient, go for a neutral color and do not let your emotions be your only guide. Take a step back and think about it! And one day your designer piece will make your grandchildren very happy.

  2. Oh I love that you got married in such a fabulous dress!!!
I never had the dreams of a big white wedding gown myself, I wanted to do it my way and on my terms.
You MUST do a post with it styled! I cannot wait!

  3. i totally hear you and agree. i don't judge people and how they spend their money but for the stage i am in my life when i splurge i do it on classic pieces that i see myself wearing for many, many, many years to come!

  7. Pink Birkin is amazing but mi favourite bag in the world is the Chanel 2.55 in black. and you are quite right in everything you say. if you invest in a large part that is for life in a color forever. I buy bags for fluor colors cloth bags I buy and if next year is not maintained or do not like the bow and get into one dropped. heheh xoxo

  8. What an unusual and beautiful wedding dress! I think your grandchildren will be very happy one day with all those great fashion treasures ^^ I'm not thinking about posterity yet, but I do take your advice that it's better to invest in timeless pieces than buy the it-bag of the season. So I'll have to let that hot pink Céline bag pass then? :)

  16. I love the pink birkin and agree mostly, however I would say a colour doesn't matter for a classic, e.g if one believes pink must be one's colour then it will be together even at the age of 60. In fact I have blue one for my first cos blue is my colour so that will never dislike. Besides especially Birkin, it's kind of casual type of bag, I'd suggest colourful ones as they are incredibly beautiful, but if you'd buy Kelly 28cm or 32cm, classic colours like bordeaux or black would be better!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh I completely agree with you, neon Birkins are for Birkin collectors (or something). I am actually about to buy a new handbag and it is not an easy choice as I want something classic yet it needs to feel like my style and yes... I want something my grandchildren can fight over one day ; ) I absolutely adore your Dior-dress, it was a smart choice and I'm sure you're going to wear it many many times!

  18. I couldn't agree more Mrs. K.!! Every time I make a "major" purchase I ask myself the same question. Will I wear this again? Can I pair it with other things to get more use out of it? Is it a nice neutral color? Is the quality good? Now that I have a child I even ask...is this something I can pass down to her (because it would be "vintage" by the time she gets it)? I would NEVER buy a neon pink bag. I would not care if it only cost $2. I don't think neon pink is a very "ADULT" color any way shape or form. Your Dior dress is fabulous! What a wonderful investment! I can see you wearing it to a fancy dinner, Opera, Cruise...all sorts of places! Thank you for sharing this wonderful post! Kiah

  19. Very wise works Mrs K. I had a traditional wedding dress - but sold it on afterwards as unlike yours I knew I would never wear it again. So turned out to be very cost effective. Otherwise do have to control the magpie in me. Xxxx

  21. You inspired me to not buy an average white wedding dress =). After all these white dresses also cost a lot. And knowing myself I will pick out the most expensive dress in the whole store. You don't have to answer thes question but did this Dior dress cost more than an average weddingdress?

  29. Hi Mrs K. Thanks for visiting my blog. I agree about shopping according to each one's budget. While Posh Spice may need and afford a Birkin in every colour, we have to shop intelligently.

  30. This is such a great post!! I don't really understand the appeal of Birkin bags. I get that they're timeless, etc, but I'm like you... I much prefer the timelessness of the Chanel. Maybe one day I will own one. Your wedding dress is gorgeous, I hope if I ever get married I will get a wedding dress that I can wear again.

  31. Totally agree, about the classic investment, I love birkin too but to the certain point, I think its so over price even though its so timeless but I prefer chanel or LV

  34. I enthusiastically agree! Not only is that Birkin bag going to be unstylish in about four seconds from when I post this comment, it's also hugely obnoxious. It's like saying "I AM SO EFFING RICH AND YOU SHOULD LOOK AT ME!" from the top of a building or something. A pink building. I am all for spending money on quality, but when I can afford it, I am getting that little teeny Chanel bag in nude or black or navy...someday, sigh.

  50. I completely agree with you. Us mere mortals can't be affording several designer it bags every single year so when time does come to splash the cash on something it would be completely ridiculous not to buy something that's going to last forever. I dream of the day I will buy my very own black chanel 2.55 bag and you know what, I'll be able to wear it with every single outfit because it may be expensive but it couldn't be more classic

  58. i agree.. i think these kind of bags are made only for a small group of people.. and ok, the bags are hand maded, there's a special process to make it, and it's a unique bag, but i think it's outrageous to spend so much money in only one bag. Here in Brazil you can buy a car with the money that you give in a birkin bag.

Okay, I haven't really bought that many designer pieces yet (the ones I'm thinking of right now are my YSL ring and the Michael Kors watch and those are still quite affordable, but for me these count as a splurge) but I would definitely apply the same tactic. Go for timeless pieces (the chanel purse, yum yum) unless you're the princess of Monaco! :)
