Delvaux love and hate

This is a story about my love and hate relationship with Delvaux. Delvaux is Belgium's most luxurious accessory brand. The house of Delvaux equals 'fine leather luxury goods' and sublime craftsmanship. Every design contains a letter D, their signature mark. The character will always be part of the product, sometimes in a very latent way and sometimes you will notice it right away.

I know Delvaux for more than 15 years. The love for the brand was enhanced by my mother. She gave me my first  Delvaux for my 17th birthday. It was a gorgeous black rucksack, pure black 675€ opulence.  From then on every leather accessory I bought was designed and crafted by Delvaux. I was in love. Our love and loyalty was endless and everlasting.

Until a few years ago. One fine day I entered the refined store because I was looking for a new bag! All of a sudden I realized that I did not like one bag. They could not enchant me anymore and the collection gave me an old fashioned feeling. At that point we ended our love relationship. My respect and trust towards Delvaux was gone. Over and out.

I asked myself: where did we go wrong? simple, they had lost their spirit. The whimsical collection I once knew was gone. It was like they only changed the colours of the bags. The rest was plain and simple, but not in a good way. The bags were reintroduced over and over again. Don't get me wrong, every brand needs classic designs that stand the test of time. The Brillant PM is a magnificent example of a true iconic bag with some innovative adaptations. But it does not mean that you have to obtain a standstill policy for the rest of the collection. You have to find a balance between tradition and innovation.

I understand Delvaux does not want to lose their identity of extraordinary craftsmanship ! This does not mean you should get stuck in your own designs. Sometimes you have to take a risk and you have to reinvent yourself. Fashion is all about marketing and personality. With all due respect, if I see old fashioned people walking around with a Delvaux bag, it does not make me want the bag. If you sell a bag for 3800$ at Barneys, you have to have a marketing plan! If nobody knows you, nobody wants you. I am a magpie, bedazzle me and I assure you that it will benefit your bank account!

So in my point of view you need to create a vision. Not only for yourself, but for your customers. Now I don't have any anchor points in my brain that represent Delvaux. So what pops up in my mind when I think about Delvaux? Confusion.

Delvaux is like an old everlasting love to me so I will never stop loving the brand. I do believe in their expertise, endless potential and pure handcrafted techniques. I am sure that one day they will overwhelm me again. Maybe this day will be here sooner than later because Delvaux is going trough some radical changes these days.

I am sure when they hear of your long standing relationship with them... they would not turn you away! YEAH BABY! Kiah

  18. Normally, I'm never really convinced by any Delvaux bags. I agree with you on the old-fashioned and very little innovative bags. On top of that, I missed their glory period so I never really fell in love. I do love the collection you've gathered, seems like you've managed to select the most interesting and varied pieces of their collection :) I'm convinced by your style anyways, that's a bonus poit =D

  21. I really enjoyed reading this because I had a similar situation with Tommy Hilfiger Denim.. I used to buy their stuff but then discovered that everything looks almost the same (t-shirts, tops, jeans...). now I prefer second hand stuff because I can get almost everything that way, including some THD :P
btw, I really like some of these Delvaux' bags, especially the one on the fourth photo.

  26. Oh their pieces are so well-made, and they remind me of Hermes in the way they position their buckle on some of their small leather goods. :)

I totally get you on the need for rejuvenation, it's essential to have that to survive in this consumer world.

  31. waw, that's a great collection of delvaux you have :) the good thing about their designs is that they're timeless, but you're right that you also look for designs that stand out

  32. I hear you, even though you feel loyal to a brand that doesn't mean they can stop delivering and you'll still keep shopping... I completely agree with you in that a brand should have a few very clear anchor points, that together with a great design and forward moving ideas is a must. I love your little collection you have there, that blue handbag has an absolutely amazing color!

  33. Great collection you have!!! I understand how you feel though, some brands just don't seem to grow. I used to feel that way about Coach. I used to love their products and then for years I didn't care too much for their bags. Yet under new leadership they have turned all the way around. Sometimes the leadership gets old and stuck in their ways. Hopefully they can turn it around too!

  34. This is such a gorgeous collection!! You have amazing pieces. I do understand where you're coming from though. But the ones you have a beautiful

  35. I can certainly see why you love them, and totally understand how you feel. Brands need to grow with the changing times and need to have a careful balance between not betraying the nature in which they are loved for and yet growing at the same time to stay fresh and current.

  42. I've always looked at Delvaux the way you look at it now.. A bit of a granny brand, if you ask me.. But my cousin bought some beautiful vintage Delvaux bags and I actually liked them! I also know a blogger with a gorgeous bag! So I guess it really depends on the bag whether I like Delvaux or not... I love some of your bags too! My favorite? The black rucksack!

  46. That backpack is devine! I've been looking for a nice rucksack, so if you ever spot one on your fashion hunts, let me know!
About the lack of inspiration...It is truly sad if a good brand looses it's vibe. Should we blame the fast fashion world? Aren't we all in need of some slowing down? 4 collection in a year, that's insane. Back to less-is-more, I would say!

  47. My mother has the same backpack you have but she never wears it :).
She's also tired of her delvaux stuff and I totally understand that because I can also see that they always use the same models over and over again.
